Jeden z pravidelných čtenářů komentoval můj poslední blog, který byl na vážnou notu, dotazem „bavíte se vůbec někdy?“ Pravdou je, že považuji většinu svých pracovních povinností za nadmíru zajímavé – ale abych neuhýbal od otázky, ano, daří se mi udělat si čas na zábavu.
Například v Praze jsme měli toto léto úžasnou hudební sezónu. Byl jsem na řadě koncertů. Jedním z vrcholů byla téměř tříhodinová show Bruce Springsteena – na této společné fotce mluvíme o transparentnosti na vládní úrovni (skutečně!).
Někteří naši nejlepší novináři ocenili umění Springsteena v těchto článcích z tohoto léta: např. od Remnika, Brookse, Besta … a alespoň jeden protiargument (od mého přítele Leona Wieseltiera)… Všichni probírají Springsteenův věk, je mu přes 60, ale já nechápu, co je tak pobuřuje. Je jen o deset let starší než já (a já se cítím na dvacet). Ti z vás, co jsou už v klubu padesátníků, ví, o čem je řeč.
Během letošního léta byla u nás také hip-hopová a funková skupina Roots. Pocházejí, stejně jako má žena Lindsay, z Filadelfie (dokonce kdysi jedna její kamarádka chodila s členem této skupiny). Hráli v jednom malém sále a posluchači z nich byli v transu. Setkání s nimi bylo pro Lindsay a mne potěšením, stejně tak i návštěva v zákulisí koncertu.
Ale asi největším hudebním zážitkem léta byla pražská show Lou Reeda. Jako člen skupiny Velvet Underground i během své sólové kariéry významně ovlivnil rock and roll. I přes fakt, že mu letos bude 70, pořád to umí rozjet jako sedmnáctiletý. Důkazem toho je, že má dospívající neteř, která byla náhodou u nás na návštěvě, je jeho velkým fanouškem . Dostala lístek na koncert od Lindsay a s Louem se osobně po představení setkala.OK, teď už víte, co jsem letos v létě dělal. A teď mě čeká návrat k zahraniční politice. Tento blog byl takovým odlehčením před dalšími příspěvky už na mnohem vážnější, zahraničně-politická témata.
What Ambassadors Do For Fun
One of my regular readers responded to my last blog, which I admit was on the serious side, by asking “don’t you ever have any fun?” The truth is, I find the substantive parts of the job intensely interesting—but I get the point, and yes, I do make time for fun.
For example, we had a great music season this summer in Prague and I went to a bunch of concerts. One highlight was a stunning almost 3-hour show by Bruce Springsteen; here I am talking government transparency with him (seriously!) during his visit: This was a summer of Springsteen appreciation by some of our best journalists (Remnick, Brooks, Best) and at least one rebuttal (by my friend Leon Wieseltier). Everyone talks about the fact that Springsteen is over 60, but I don’t see what all the fuss is about. He is only ten years older than I am (and I am a teenager in my own mind). Those of you who are already in the half century club know what I mean.
This summer the hip-hop and funk supergroup the Roots also came to town. Like Lindsay, they hail from Philly (in fact a friend of hers went out with one of the members of the group at one time). They played a smaller venue and the place was levitating. Lindsay and I enjoyed welcoming them and hanging out a little bit backstage:
But maybe the biggest musical thrill of the summer was seeing Lou Reed’s show here in Prague. Through Velvet Underground and then his solo career, he has hugely influenced rock and roll. And despite the fact that he turned 70 this year, he still rocks like a 17-year old. The proof of this is that my teen age niece who happened to be visiting is a huge fan of his, and ended up using Lindsay’s ticket and then meeting Lou after the show:OK, now you know what I did this summer. Now back to foreign policy! This post should justify a lot of heavy-duty international relations discourse for several blogs to come.
