Dne 8. ledna jsem měl tu čest reprezentovat americkou Fulbrightovu komisi na slavnostním ceremoniálu, na němž jsme společně s rektory Univerzity Karlovy a ČVUT podepsali smlouvu o zapojení těchto předních českých univerzit do programu „Fulbright Distinguished Chair“.
České vysoké školy budou hostit významné americké vědce a pedagogy a připojí se tak k brněnské Masarykově univerzitě, která se k tomuto prestižnímu programu připojila už v roce 2009. Společně se mnou a Fulbrightovou komisí dohodu podepsali rektor Univerzity Karlovy Václav Hampl, děkan Matematicko-fyzikální fakulty UK Jan Kratochvíl, rektor Českého vysokého učení technického Václav Havlíček a děkan Fakulty elektrotechnické ČVUT Pavel Ripka. Podpisového aktu se také zúčastnil náměstek ministra školství pro výzkum a vysoké školství Tomáš Hruda. Video z akce najdete na následujícím odkazu.
Fulbright Distinguished Chair je speciální kategorií vládních Fulbrightových stipendií. Pobyt předních amerických akademiků v rámci tohoto programu financuje kromě české a americké vlády také samotná česká hostitelská instituce.
Koordinátorka programu Hana Rambousková uvedla, že „Distinguished Chair na Matematicko-fyzikální fakultě UK bude otevřen pro americké vědce v oborech matematika, informatika a fyzika, zatímco na Elektrotechnické fakultě ČVUT by rádi přivítali amerického experta v oborech silnoproudá elektrotechnika a energetika.“ První američtí stipendisté by v rámci nových smluv měli do České republiky přicestovat v roce 2014.
Tento program je ovšem jen další příklad těsnější spolupráce mezi Spojenými státy a Českou republikou na poli vědy a techniky. Další naše společné programy zahrnují výzkumné a rozvojové projekty navazující na společnou deklaraci o civilním využití jaderné energie, kterou podepsali tehdejší americký ministr energetiky a český ministr průmyslu a obchodu v prosinci 2010, která zavazuje oba naše státy ke spolupráci na současných i budoucích civilních jaderných projektech a v podpoře vědecké a výzkumné spolupráce.

Czech Republic Welcomes Establishment of Fulbright Distinguished Chairs
On January 8 I had the honor to represent the Fulbright Commission of the United States in a signing ceremony with the rectors of Charles University (UK) and Czech Technical University (ČVUT). We signed an agreement including these leading Czech universities in the Fulbright Distinguished Chair program.
The Czech universities will host distinguished American scholars and lecturers, joining Masaryk University in Brno, where this prestigious program was implemented in 2009. Signing the agreement with me and with the Fulbright Commission were Charles University Rector Václav Hampl and Mathematics and Physics Faculty Dean Jan Kratochvíl, ČVUT Rector Václav Havlíček; and ČVUT Electrical Engineering Faculty Dean Pavel Ripka. Deputy Minister of Education for Research and Universities Tomáš Hruda was also present at the ceremonial signing. You can see some video of the signing here.
The Fulbright Distinguished Chair is a special category of the US government’s Fulbright Scholarships. Long-term visits by leading American academics under this program are financed by the relevant Czech hosting institution, as well as the Czech and U.S. Commissions.
To quote program coordinator Hana Rambousková: “the Distinguished Chair at the Charles University Mathematics and Physics Faculty will be opened for U.S. scientists in the fields of mathematics, information technology and physics; while the ČVUT Electrical Engineering Faculty hopes to welcome an American scholar in the fields of Electric Power Engineering Energy Production, Transmission and Distribution.“ The first U.S. scholars under these agreements are expected to come to the Czech Republic in 2014.
This program is yet another example of the growing ties of cooperation between the United States and the Czech Republic in the field of science and engineering. Among the many examples are the various research and development projects growing out of the Joint Declaration on Civil Nuclear Power that was signed by Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and Czech Republic Minister of Industry and Trade Martin Kocourek in December 2010, which expressed the commitment of both nations to cooperate on current and future civil nuclear projects and encouraged scientific and research cooperation.
